Invisalign Q & A
What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment system that relies on clear, nearly invisible plastic aligners instead of metal brackets, wires, or rubber bands. The aligners place mild pressure on your teeth and jaw, gradually moving them into the optimal position.
Aside from making your smile appear more balanced and symmetrical, Invisalign improves your oral health. By preventing bite issues like crowding, it’s easier to brush and floss.
What types of alignment issues can Invisalign correct?
At Personal Touch Dentistry, Dr. Antonio uses Invisalign to correct mild and moderate alignment issues, including:
- Crowding
- Overlapping teeth
- A misaligned jaw
- Crossbite
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Overjet
You might also benefit from treatment with Invisalign if you have visible gaps between two or more teeth.
What does treatment with Invisalign involve?
Before prescribing Invisalign treatment, Dr. Antonio conducts an oral exam and takes a series of digital X-rays. She uses this information to assess the alignment of your teeth and jaw and to determine if you’re a good candidate.
Next, Dr. Antonio uses an intraoral scanner to take digital impressions of your teeth and jaw. She uploads your impressions to a computer design program and develops a custom care plan that maps the movements of your teeth. After finalizing a plan, she sends your impressions to a dental laboratory.
The laboratory creates a custom set of aligners that fit your mouth perfectly. During treatment, you visit Personal Touch Dentistry every two or three weeks.
At each checkup, you transition into a new pair of mouthpieces. The mouthpieces place pressure on your teeth and jaws, changing their location and position.
How long does treatment with Invisalign take?
The length of time that Invisalign treatment takes depends on the alignment issues addressed and your commitment to the care plan.
Some people achieve their desired results in 3-6* months, but it can take longer. To ensure a positive outcome, wear your aligners 20-22 hours each day, only removing them to brush and floss or to eat.
When treatment is complete, Dr. Antonio has you change into a retainer. A retainer is a custom orthodontic appliance that prevents your teeth from shifting.
Do I need to clean my Invisalign aligners?
Yes. It’s important to clean your Invisalign aligners daily. If you’re in a rush, rinse them in tap water. At night, before going to bed, gently brush them with a soft-bristle toothbrush. For more thorough cleanings, ask Dr. Antonio about Invisalign cleaning crystals.
