Crowns and Bridges Q & A
What are crowns and bridges?
Crowns and bridges are dental restorations that serve several purposes:
Crowns
Crowns are coverings made of ceramic, porcelain, or amalgam bonded to the top of a tooth. They repair damage or decay, preventing the need for an extraction. To keep your crown in optimal condition, brush and floss daily and visit Personal Touch Dentistry two times a year.
Bridges
Bridges are restorations that fill the space left by a missing tooth. They’re held in place by two dental crowns or a metal framework bonded to your surrounding healthy teeth.
Who needs crowns and bridges?
At Personal Touch Dentistry, Dr. Antonio uses crowns to:
- Repair weak or decaying teeth
- Cover dental implants
- Hold dental bridges in place
- Complete root canals
- Make cosmetic modifications
Dr. Antonio uses dental bridges to replace one (or multiple) missing teeth. By filling a gap in your smile, it’s possible to prevent your remaining permanent teeth from shifting.
What does getting crowns and bridges involve?
The process for getting crowns and bridges is completely different.
Crowns
At Personal Touch Dentistry, getting a crown takes one appointment.
Following an oral exam, Dr. Antonio administers a local anesthetic and removes the decaying or damaged portion of your tooth. Then, she takes digital impressions of your tooth with an intraoral scanner and uploads them to a CAD/CAM design program. Dr. Antonio uses the program to design a custom crown that fits perfectly.
After approving your design, she transfers it to a milling machine. The milling machine creates a custom crown from a block of porcelain. When the machine finishes, Dr. Antonio lines up the crown with your tooth and bonds it in place.
Bridges
At Personal Touch Dentistry, getting a bridge takes two appointments.
After conducting an oral exam and taking a series of digital X-rays, Dr. Antonio administers a local anesthetic and prepares the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile to receive crowns. To do that, she removes a thin layer of enamel from the top and sides. Then, she takes digital impressions of your mouth with an intraoral scanner.
Dr. Antonio sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that uses them to design a bridge. A week or two later, you return to Personal Touch Dentistry. Dr. Antonio administers a local anesthetic and bonds the bridge in place. Afterward, she polishes the bridge and provides care instructions.
