New York City Root Canal - Why does the dental pulp need to be removed? There are times in which Dr. Antonio may have to remove the dental pulp of a patient's tooth. In most cases, the dental pulp needs to be removed from a tooth because of an infection. Typically a patient will come into Dr. Antonio's office in New York City complaining of extreme pain in a particular tooth. If there has been decay and/or infection to the tooth, it will reach the nerves of the tooth that are within the dental pulp. The only way to save the tooth while addressing the pain and discomfort may be to complete a root canal.
A root canal requires Dr. Antonio to drill into the infected tooth, remove the dental pulp (which includes the nerves), and then disinfect the inside of the tooth. After this has been done, Dr. Antonio will then use a filling to replace the dental pulp, and will then place a crown on top to protect the tooth. This is done because once the dental pulp is removed from the tooth; it no longer has a blood supply and can become weak and brittle. The dental crown will help protect the tooth from becoming cracked, chipped, or damaged and needing to be extracted later on down the road. Removing the dental pulp of a tooth during a root canal is not a necessarily painful process due to the fact that the patient can be numbed to keep them from feeling pain during the procedure. The root canal is done within a day, from start to finish. What happens after root canal? After root canal (RCT) is performed, the tooth becomes weak and brittle and can be prone to fracture. Post and core is placed inside tooth to strengthen and support the internal portion of the tooth. It replaces the portion of where the nerve used to be and fill in areas that were affected by decay. Post and core is a beneficial procedure after a root canal to protect the tooth from breaking. With Dr. Antonio's CEREC machine, a dental crown can be completed and placed over the tooth on the same day, relieving the patient from having to make a separate appointment to return for placement of the protective crown. If you are experiencing pain and discomfort on a tooth, it may be infected and need a root canal.
